Ghana has formally launched its campaign to secure continued representation on two key governing bodies of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the ITU Council and the Radio Regulations Board (RRB). The announcement was made by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), during a special event held on 19th November 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Addressing delegates, the Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing commitment to international digital cooperation, recalling the country’s active involvement in the ITU since joining the Union in 1957. He noted that Ghana has been a member of the ITU Council for more than two decades, contributing consistently to radiocommunication policy, standardisation, capacity building, and global digital development.

Hon. Nartey George highlighted Ghana’s leadership within Africa’s communications landscape, referencing the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) designation as an ITU-certified training partner since 2019. He emphasized that through this role, Ghana continues to support digital skills development for regulators and operators across the region.

The Minister urged Member States to endorse Ghana’s bid for re-election to the ITU Council, and further called for support for the continued service of Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, Director-General of the NCA, on the Radio Regulations Board for Region D for the 2027–2030 term.

He stressed that Ing. Fianko’s work in spectrum management, harmful interference mitigation, and regulatory enforcement has strengthened the effectiveness of the RRB since his election in 2023. Maintaining this expertise on the Board, he said, is essential for continuity and stability.

Briefly addressing delegates, Ing. Fianko expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana and Member States for the confidence shown in his first term. He pledged to continue upholding the Radio Regulations with fairness, transparency, and technical integrity, and appealed for sustained support to carry his experience into the next Board cycle.

Ghana’s campaign forms part of broader efforts to reinforce its role in shaping global digital governance and advancing Africa’s interests within the ITU.
