The Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL) has opened its first regional office in Kumasi, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to decentralise operations and improve access to publishing services nationwide.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, who highlighted GPCL’s historical and future significance. Abubakar, serving as the special guest, stated that the new office in Kumasi represents GPCL’s revival and commitment to restoring its former glory.
“This occasion signifies a monumental step forward in our collective journey towards reclaiming and advancing the esteemed legacy of GPCL,” she said.
Abubakar reflected on GPCL’s rich history, recalling the establishment of presses in Tema, Tamale, Victoriaborg, and Takoradi, as well as sales points in all regional capitals. She noted that these facilities ensured vital information and publications reached every corner of the nation. Despite challenges that led to the cessation of many operations, the Minister praised the Kumasi office’s inauguration as a sign of the company’s revival.
She also highlighted GPCL’s recent success, pointing out its consistent profitability over the past two years, which she attributed to prudent and efficient management. Abubakar emphasised that this achievement shows that state institutions can thrive and contribute significantly to national development with exemplary leadership.
“GPCL has emerged as one of the most viable state institutions. This remarkable turnaround is a testament to prudent and efficient management,” she remarked.
Abubakar was grateful to the GPCL Board, Dr. Daniel Owusu-Ansah, and the management team under David Boateng Asante. She also commended the staff for their dedication and hard work, particularly during challenging times.
The new Kumasi branch is a practical step towards decentralisation, making essential services more accessible. It will serve the Ashanti Region and surrounding areas, facilitating more accessible access to a wide range of GPCL products and services.
The presence of GPCL in Kumasi is expected to positively impact the local economy by creating jobs and fostering partnerships. Additionally, it aims to empower the local population by providing timely access to crucial information and publications, enhancing transparency and informed decision-making.
