Ghanas Black Queens and Black Meteors will receive coordinated support from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as they attempt to end the countrys 24-year absence from Olympic football.

The two organisations held a high-level meeting with the management team of the Black Queens and the technical leadership of the national U-23 side to establish a joint strategy for qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.

Ghana last featured in Olympic football at the 2004 Athens Games. GOC President Richard Akpokavie said the meeting was necessary to help ensure football is represented when the Games return in 2028.

The last time football was at the Olympics was in the 2004 Athens Games; therefore, we had to meet to see possible collaboration for our mutual benefits, Mr Akpokavie said.

He praised the GFA for setting out the qualification schedule and reaffirmed the GOCs support throughout the process.

The Black Queens are due to begin their Olympic qualifying campaign in June 2026, with the process continuing until December 2027 over five series of matches.

The Black Meteors will start their campaign between November 2026 and March 2027. Their immediate objective is to qualify for the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

That tournament will serve as the decisive stage for the mens Olympic qualification process, with the two finalists earning automatic places at the 2028 Games. Two African teams from the mens competition and two from the womens competition will ultimately qualify for Los Angeles.

GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, who led the associations delegation, thanked the GOC for meeting the teams and their officials.

He said close cooperation was essential because the GOC has the ultimate responsibility for Ghanas participation in the Olympic Games.

Rev. Richmond Quarcoo, Chef de Mission (CDM) for Team Ghana to the LA2028 Olympic Games, also pledged his offices involvement and said it would maintain direct coordination with the GFA.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both organisations. Alongside Mr Addo, the GFA delegation included management committee chairman Eugene Nobel Noel, vice-chairman Frederick Agbenyo, Nana Kwame Danquah, Michael Boakye, Ishmael Hamidu and Head of Business Development Janice Bossman.

The GOC delegation comprised Mr Akpokavie, Secretary General Muniru Kassim Mohamed, Third Vice President Ernest Danso, Rev. Quarcoo, Director of Communications Charles Osei Asibey and Press Officer Kenneth Odeng Adade.

Both parties agreed to establish a structured plan for the qualification campaigns, with the united objective of ending Ghanas long wait for Olympic football.
