In a rare and urgent move, Ghana’s Parliament has been summoned back from recess for an emergency session today, September 3, 2024.
This crucial decision, announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on August 7, following a petition from Majority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, marks a significant turn of events.
In his petition, the Effutu MP expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s decision to adjourn the previous parliamentary session sine die on July 30, 2024, adding a layer of tension to the proceedings.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized the necessity of reconvening Parliament to tackle unresolved government matters.
The agenda for the emergency sitting includes discussions and approval of the Financing Agreement between the Government of Ghana and the International Development Association.
Other items on the agenda, equally crucial, are requests for tax exemptions related to the One District, One Factory Programme, matters concerning the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, and the review of several pending bills that hold the key to the nation’s future.
The session will be held at the Dome of the Accra International Conference Centre, as the main chamber of Parliament is currently retrofitting.
