The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwabena Dwumfuor, has announced that due to illegal mining activities in Ghana, the GJA will spearhead a media campaign on environmental protection and the nation’s welfare.

Aligning with the global theme for World Press Freedom Day 2024, “Press For The Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” the GJA has chosen the theme “Leveraging Journalism for a Sustainable Environment and Future.”

Addressing a forum at Koforidua Technical University on May 3rd, 2024, he urged the media to renew their concerted efforts against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as Galamsey.

“In the past, our collective action against Galamsey yielded positive results, drawing national attention and spurring action. However, due to the current regression in action by authorities, our land and water bodies suffer. We would have seen progress if not for the lapses in enforcement,” he emphasized.

He stressed that neglecting our duties, as is happening now, poses greater harm to the nation.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Royal chairmanship of Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, and the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong.

They were joined by guests such as the Minister of Information-designate, Fatimatu Abubakar; the Head of Office & Representative of UNESCO Office in Accra, Edmond Moukala, and the Press Attaché at the Embassy of the United States of America in Accra, Kevin Brosnahan.
