The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are expected to create investment and trade opportunities for Ghanaian businesses across sectors, including infrastructure, logistics, media, tourism and technology, officials said at a business forum in Accra.
The Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) said the July 23–Aug. 2 event will serve not only as a global sporting competition but also as a platform for enterprise, deal-making and cross-border partnerships within the Commonwealth.
The Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana, Keith McMahon, said major international sporting events are increasingly being leveraged as economic catalysts, driving investment, innovation and business linkages beyond the host country.
He said Ghana, with its established presence in disciplines such as boxing, athletics and para-sports, is well-positioned to tap into the commercial value chains linked to the Games.
“Events of this scale attract global attention and create real economic prospects through infrastructure development, sports technology and youth-focused industries,” he said, adding that businesses can benefit through supply chains, services and strategic partnerships.
McMahon also pointed to growing UK-Ghana collaboration in the sports economy, referencing the inaugural UK-Ghana Sports Business Forum held last November in partnership with the National Sports Authority.
He said the initiative has helped lay the groundwork for deeper cooperation in sports development, leadership and investment.
Looking ahead, he said both countries could expand collaboration in areas such as sports infrastructure, job creation within sports-related industries and entrepreneurship in apparel, wellness and digital media.
The Head of Mission at CWEIC, John Apea, said multiple sectors are expected to benefit from the Games, including media production, tourism, logistics, infrastructure and digital services, with opportunities extending across Commonwealth markets.
“Glasgow 2026 is projected to generate over £100 million in direct investment and create more than 1,000 jobs,” he said, urging Ghanaian firms to position early to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
He cited the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which contributed more than £1 billion to the UK economy, as an indication of the potential commercial returns associated with such events.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, said the Games have evolved into a platform of broader economic relevance, linking sport with education, skills development and enterprise.
He said the government is shifting towards a more structured and sustainable approach to sports development, with a focus on financing, talent identification and institutional reform.
According to him, the establishment of the Ghana Sports Fund is intended to provide a more predictable and transparent mechanism to support grassroots development, school sports, athlete preparation and infrastructure. areas that have historically faced inconsistent funding.
Mr. Adams said strengthening governance and accountability within the sports sector remains critical, noting that efforts to reduce inefficiencies are key to unlocking long-term value.
He added that the government is prioritising grassroots and school sports through a coordinated national framework that connects basic schools, senior high schools and technical institutions into a unified talent development pathway.
“The objective is to identify talent early, support it consistently and develop it in a structured manner,” he said.
Officials said the 2026 Games present opportunities for partnerships in sports science, digital content, tourism, infrastructure and youth development—areas where Ghanaian businesses can collaborate with international partners.
They added that early engagement by the private sector will be crucial for firms seeking to integrate into supply chains and maximise the commercial benefits associated with the Games.
