In a growing movement to enhance global health initiatives, advocates are urging a significant reform in funding systems to better support Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
Mr. Raphael Ahenu Jnr, CEO and Founder of the Global Media Foundation, emphasized the need for a shift in global health funding systems in a press release signed by him and copied to Newsghana.com.gh
He stated that CSOs should be allowed to apply for funds directly, rather than navigating the current requirement to go through a Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM).
While the CCM aims to ensure proper fund management, critics argue it restricts access for smaller, grassroots organizations that often need support the most.
“CSOs are the heart of community health efforts,” Mr. Ahenu reiterated. “By giving them direct access to funding, we can help them create solutions that work for their specific communities.”
Advocates like Mr. Ahenu believe that organizations closely connected to their communities can respond more effectively to health issues, ensuring that assistance reaches those in greatest need.
The current CCM system has faced scrutiny for being overly centralized and lacking transparency. Concerns have been raised about political influences affecting funding decisions, which may divert resources away from the areas that require them most.
Many smaller CSOs find the CCM process complicated, often missing out on funding opportunities despite having valuable solutions to offer.
He noted that other funding bodies have successfully implemented models that allow direct applications from various organizations, demonstrating that such systems can lead to improved health outcomes when appropriate safeguards are in place. As global health issues become increasingly complex, flexible funding systems are essential for effective responses.
Mr. Ahenu and other advocates are calling on global funding bodies to rethink their systems. By allowing CSOs to apply directly, they can leverage local knowledge and expertise, ultimately driving stronger health outcomes.
The hope is that funding organizations will recognize the benefits of this change and work towards a more inclusive funding approach.
