The Government of Ghana has taken decisive action against Akonta Mining Company Ltd., allegedly owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources has directed the Minerals Commission to immediately revoke the company’s mining lease due to unauthorized mining activities within the protected Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Addressing the media in Accra, the Minister emphasized that Akonta Mining’s operations in the forest reserve were illegal and in direct violation of Ghana’s mining laws. He further instructed the Forestry Commission to interdict any officials found to have facilitated these illicit activities.
This move aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ which has severely impacted the nation’s environment. The government has vowed to trace and prosecute financiers behind such operations, with Akonta Mining identified as a significant offender.
Investigations revealed that Akonta Mining, despite lacking the necessary permits, encroached upon the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, causing extensive environmental degradation. Reports indicate that the company operated six illegal mining sites within the reserve.
On April 17, 2025, an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission resulted in the arrest of 51 individuals, including 8 Chinese nationals and 43 Ghanaians. The operation also led to the seizure of approximately 30 excavators, firearms, vehicles, motorbikes, and other mining equipment.
The Minister has authorized the Minerals Commission to revoke Akonta Mining’s licenses and directed the Forestry Commission to suspend officials implicated in the illegal activities. He stressed that the government will not hesitate to name, shame, and prosecute any individuals or entities involved in illegal mining, regardless of their status.
This action serves as a stern warning to all mining companies operating in Ghana to adhere strictly to the nation’s mining laws and regulations. The government remains resolute in its fight against illegal mining to protect the country’s natural resources for future generations.
