GRT&DIP provides voice and data services to over 1.5 million Ghanaians

In a significant milestone for Ghana’s digital advancement, Mrs. Eva Andoh-Poku, the Administrator for GIFEC, under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, has on Saturday, 17th November, 2024, commissioned two rural telephony sites in the Ashanti Region.

The sites, located in Kensere and Ntroaku in the Bekwai Municipal of Ashanti Region, are part of the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Projects.

Commissioning the sites, Mrs. Eva Andoh-Poku, posited that in order to provide mobile network coverage for around 3.4 million people, 1,008 Rural Telephony Sites out of the 2,016 currently being built by GIFEC as part of the Ghana Rural Telephony & Digital Inclusion Project (GRT&DIP) have been completed, and connecting about 1.5MiIIion people.

However, About 900 of the 2,016 sites are powered by solar energy.

Mrs. Andoh-Poku, expatiated GRT&DIP seeks to extend mobile telephone service coverage to areas where access is limited and where licensed operators have been unable or unwilling to expand due to commercial or other constraints.

The Administrator, noted that, while telecommunications have spread significantly, telephony infrastructure remains concentrated in major economic centers. This therefore, calls for the prioritization of telecommunication and ICT facilities, for easy accessibility nationwide.

As typical Ghanaians with maintenance culture deficit, She therefore charged the people to protect and maintain the existing investments in beneficiary communities for sustained collective benefits.
