Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara has openly acknowledged the internal problems within the club that contributed to their disappointing 2023/24 Ghana Premier League campaign.

Despite starting his tenure with promising performances, Ouattara’s side struggled significantly in the latter part of the season, resulting in a nerve-wracking battle against relegation. The team only secured their top-flight status with a crucial win over Bechem United on the final day, amidst controversy.

“Last season, after the game against Bofoakwa Tano at WAFA Park, our problems started,” Ouattara said. “The issues were internal and not with the board or management but within the playing body itself.”

Ouattara revealed that conflicts among the players and between the technical team and the squad were exacerbated following a challenging match against Samartex, which also saw the resignation of the club’s goalkeeper coach.

“We’re trying to solve it,” Ouattara continued. “Sometimes it’s personal problems between the technical team and the players and also among the players themselves. The resignation of the goalkeeper coach worsened the situation.”

Reflecting on the experience, Ouattara emphasised that dealing with these challenges is part of the growth process. “Experience is not always about the good, but sometimes about the bad. I try to find solutions and move forward.”

Looking ahead to the new season, Ouattara highlighted a deliberate approach to recruitment as a key strategy for improvement. He is focused on filling specific gaps within the squad with quality players.

“We have a policy for recruitment. I scout and research players over a number of matches before making a decision,” he explained. “For the goalkeeping department, I need two players in that position. Up till now, I have one. I plan to ensure that we have two players for each position.”

As Hearts of Oak prepare for the upcoming season, Ouattara’s strategic focus on strengthening the team and addressing internal issues aims to build a more resilient and competitive squad.
