Ghana Premier League giants Hearts of Oak have opened discussions with Accra Lions head coach Richard Afoakwa over a potential move to the club’s technical team, according to reports.

The Phobians are reportedly interested in appointing Afoakwa as assistant coach while also entrusting him with responsibility for their youth development programme. The proposed dual role forms part of the club’s efforts to strengthen both its first-team structure and long-term player development strategy ahead of the new season.

However, Accra Lions are keen to retain the services of the highly rated young tactician and have intensified efforts to secure him on a new contract. Club officials are understood to view Afoakwa as a central figure in their future plans and are reluctant to lose him to a domestic rival.

The situation has sparked a battle between the two clubs, with negotiations expected to continue in the coming days as Hearts seek to lure the coach to Accra Sports Stadium while Lions work to convince him to stay.

Afoakwa’s reputation has grown significantly in recent seasons, particularly following his role in helping Inter Allies avoid relegation during the 2024/25 campaign. His performances have established him as one of Ghana’s most promising young coaches.

The coach now faces an important decision as he weighs loyalty to Accra Lions against the opportunity to join one of the country’s most successful clubs.
