Abby Osei-Tutu, co-founder of TribeMeets has shared how she and a friend built their community-driven platform from scratch without any initial funding.

Speaking on Channel One TV‘s ‘The Chat‘ with Ekow Koomson on Saturday April 19, she recalled the humble beginnings of TribeMeets.

She noted that they hosted their first gathering on a friend’s rooftop, inviting members of the African diaspora to connect and share experiences.

“We used our friend’s rooftop space for free and told people to bring their own drinks. That’s how we created the vibe,” she said.

The idea for TribeMeets came from Abby’s own struggles in forming new relationships after moving to a different country.

“I realised how difficult it can be to build new connections after leaving established ones,” she noted.

TribeMeets is now an online platform that helps people from the African diaspora find friends, cultural resources, events, and businesses that align with their identity. It is designed to make integration into African communities smoother, offering support and connections for those adjusting to new environments.

Beyond social networking, Abby and her co-founder are creating a safe space for meaningful interactions, helping individuals feel a sense of belonging as they navigate cultural transitions.
