On October 10, 2024, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) declared a strike to demand a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting in ecologically sensitive areas such as forest reserves, farms, and water bodies.
During a referendum organized by UTAG’s National Executive Council (NEC), 2,153 out of 2,762 members voted “Yes” to support the strike. This reflected a strong call for an immediate stop to illegal mining, known as galamsey.
However, speaking to this on Peace FM‘s morning show ‘Kokrokoo‘, Prof. Smart Sarpong, a Research Fellow at the Kumasi Technical University suggested the strike was needless.
“I’ll plead with UTAG; The Universities are solution centres and so what is our contribution to curbing the menace (galamsey). Will this (strike) be our best solution? …Infact most of the universities are at home so I don’t see the head and tail of this strike” he indicated
