The Inspector-General of Police (IGP)’s Special Operations Team, deployed to Kumasi to intensify the fight against crime, has been withdrawn barely 24 hours after arriving in the Ashanti Regional capital.

The team, led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil and ASP Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo, arrived in Kumasi on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, and immediately embarked on intelligence-led patrols aimed at dismantling criminal networks within the metropolis.

The operation targeted various crimes, including robbery, stealing, rape, violent attacks on commuters, drug peddling and abuse, as well as the sale and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. A particular focus was placed on the notorious drug den popularly known as ‘Tinker Island’.

A total of 111 personnel were deployed for the exercise, supported by 10 service vehicles, including a Black Maria for conveying suspects and an armoured carrier for officer safety.

The team conducted extensive inner-city patrols across several townships and streets, including areas around the Manhyia Palace enclave, with special attention to identified crime hotspots.

During its first major operation at Tinker Island, the team arrested 19 suspects in connection with drug-related offences and seized quantities of suspected narcotic substances.

However, as the team prepared to extend operations to other areas, it was recalled to the Police Headquarters in Accra. According to a Citinewsroom report, sources within the service confirmed that the team was asked to return to base, though the exact reason for the sudden withdrawal remains unclear.

The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the development.

The IGP’s Special Operations Team is usually deployed for high-impact, targeted interventions to restore calm in crime-prone areas.

The recall comes hours after the Police Management Board led by the IGP held a meeting with internationally acclaimed Ghanaian artist and founder of Red Clay Studios, Ibrahim Mahama following alleged assault on him by members of the Special Operations Team.

While the artist insists on a resolve to fight for justice, the special operations team has denied the alleged assault which is reported to occurred in Tamale on Friday, March 20, 2026, after Eid prayers.
