Inaki Williams was forced to sit out Sunday’s La Liga match between Athletic Club and Celta Vigo, missing his first league match in nearly seven years.

The 28-year-old had played 251 consecutive league games for Athletic, making him the first player to accomplish the incredible feat.

Williams was left out of Bilbao’s matchday squad for the 1-0 defeat at Celta Vigo after suffering an injury in their previous game against Valencia in the Copa del Rey quarter-final.

The Ghana international broke the previous record for the most consecutive appearances in October 2021, surpassing Real Soceidad’s Juanan Larranaga’s 202.

He has now completed his run of 251 consecutive matches, an incredible feat that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

Williams has spent his entire career at Bilbao, appearing in 356 games and scoring 79 goals.
