Inaki Williams has ruled himself out of Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar this month due to an ongoing knee injury.
The Athletic Bilbao striker revealed that he has been playing with pain in his right knee for the past few weeks and has made the decision, in consultation with medical services, to halt his participation and address the issue to ensure a full recovery for the preseason.
Expressing his disappointment at being unable to represent his national team, Williams stated, “This wasn’t an easy decision to make because I won’t be able to be with my national team, Ghana, for the next meeting.”
However, he affirmed his commitment to the team and expressed his readiness to return if called upon by the coach in the future.
Since pledging his allegiance to Ghana last year, the former Spain international has struggled to make a significant impact. In his eight appearances, including three matches at the 2022 World Cup, Williams has yet to score a goal for the West African team.
Ghana will face Madagascar at the Mahamasina Municipal Stadium on June 18, with a win or draw enough for the Black Stars to secure qualification to the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.
