Brigadier General Zibri Bawah Ayorrogo, Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA-CD), has responded to the recent altercation at the Kulungugu Border Post, denouncing the incident as regrettable and assuring that responsible officers will be held accountable.
Speaking to the media during a visit to the Upper East Region, Brigadier General Ayorrogo emphasized the need for professionalism and adherence to protocol among security personnel.
He expressed his deep regret over the incident at Kulungugu, a sentiment shared by the entire GRA-CD.
Everyone’s responsibilities are clearly defined, and any issues must be handled through proper channels. We expect our personnel to uphold professionalism at all times.”
The altercation, captured in a viral video on social media, involved officers from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Customs Division of the GRA.
In response, a joint committee comprising members from GIS and GRA-CD has been established to investigate the incident thoroughly and recommend preventive measures.
“The security institutions are professional and disciplined, and we do not condone any misconduct,” Brigadier General Ayorrogo affirmed. “The investigation is ongoing, and those found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary actions.”
While commending the professionalism displayed by most officers, he cautioned against actions that could intimidate traders and undermine tax collection efforts.
Brigadier General Ayorrogo highlighted the vulnerability of the country’s porous borders to revenue leakage and outlined measures, such as introducing scanners at revenue collection points, to enhance oversight of goods entering and exiting the country.
He called for active collaboration from traders and the public, emphasizing their crucial role in bolstering revenue mobilization efforts and ensuring compliance with customs regulations for national economic stability.
As investigations continue, the GRA-CD reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding its ranks’ highest standards of integrity and discipline, ensuring public trust and operational efficiency.
