With the pivotal super delegate elections only a day away, the political arena is set for a dramatic showdown as Kwabena Agyei Agyapong vies for a spot among the final five contenders in the race for the coveted flagbearership position of the New Patriotic Party. As the party seeks to shatter the status quo for prolonged political dominance, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong carries the mantle of “The New Dawn,” a beacon of promise he says represents hope for a fresh start for the party and also rekindles the faith of Ghanaians in the country’s constitutional democracy.
Mr Agyapong has said during his campaign that his government would work around six thematic areas that would make Ghana economically robust and resilient, fiscally responsible, socially cohesive, and fully accountable to the people.
In a resounding endorsement of Kwabena Agyei Agyapong’s journey to the flagbearership position, Mr. Armstrong Agyei Kwakye, a media and communication manager within the campaign team, exudes unwavering confidence. Drawing from an extensive campaign tour that spanned all 16 regions of the country, the sentiment of the delegates rings loud and clear.
“Many of them attested to the fact that they have known him and have worked with him since 92 and voted for him to become General Secretary of the party in 2014, and are ready to vote for him again,” he said.
The overwhelming support garnered during his campaign, he said, has not only solidified his (Mr Agyapong) position as a familiar face but also highlighted his resilience in overcoming adversities, such as the setback of a suspension in 2015.
Steering a campaign that emerges as the underdog, Mr. Kwakye also acknowledges the challenges posed by resource limitations, yet remains steadfast in his conviction that Kwabena Agyapong’s compelling rapport with the delegates will be the driving force in this race. With momentum building, the campaign’s strategic approach shines through, tackling each milestone methodically, from the forthcoming special delegates conference to the pivotal main primary in November.
The stakes have never been higher as Kwabena Agyapong will face off against nine other formidable individuals, each with their own vision and backing, including old dog Alan ‘Kash’ Kyeremanteng, Bawumia, and vociferous Kennedy Agyapong. This electoral skirmish, although it may be a battle of ideologies, will serve as testament to the shifting tides within the NPP as the party resolves to break the cycle of an eight-year rule.
