John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to restore the original names of public universities that were renamed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. This promise is part of his campaign platform as he seeks election in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, located in the Central Region, Mahama emphasized that if elected, his administration will ensure that these institutions return to their original names, which he believes are more in line with their foundational missions.
“We will revert the names of public universities renamed by the NPP to better reflect their core mandates,” Mahama stated.
The NPP government had renamed several public universities, including the Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS), which was changed to Simon D. Dombo University, and the Navrongo Campus, renamed in honor of C.K. Tedam. Both individuals were significant figures in the NPP’s Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition.
Additionally, the University of Energy and Natural Resources was also renamed, with other tertiary institutions reportedly under consideration for similar changes by the Akufo-Addo administration.
