Keir Starmer has stepped down as Britain’s Prime Minister and Labour Party leader, bringing an unexpected end to his time in office less than two years after leading Labour back to government.
Starmer’s departure follows a historic election victory in July 2024 that ended more than a decade of Conservative rule. In his resignation statement, he defended his leadership and said his decisions were driven by what he believed was best for the country.
During his tenure, Starmer focused on rebuilding Labour’s image after years of internal challenges, highlighting efforts to restore public confidence, strengthen the party’s credibility and tackle issues including anti-Semitism.
The resignation has triggered discussions over Labour’s next leader, with former mayor Andy Burnham emerging as a leading contender. Party officials are reportedly exploring a swift transition ahead of the annual conference in September.
