Asante Kotoko Owner, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, held an important meeting with the club’s former players and supporters on Friday at the Manhyia Palace.
The meeting aimed to chart a new course for the club following the conclusion of the three-year mandate of the Dr Kwame Kyei-led board.
During the gathering, various pressing issues were discussed, and some crucial information was revealed. According to Akoma Sports, it was revealed that Asante Kotoko’s current debt stands at over GH¢3 million. In response to this financial challenge, the Asantehene promised to personally settle the outstanding debt of the club.
The passionate supporters of Kotoko appealed to the Asantehene to appoint a new executive board chairman, and the royal leader agreed to this request, although he asked for some time to consider the decision carefully.
Additionally, it was disclosed that Asante Kotoko would require more than GHC5 million to effectively run the club, which would facilitate the settlement of all existing debts and aid in recruitment efforts.
Furthermore, during the meeting, Asantehene confirmed that the players of Kotoko have been unpaid for a period of five months, highlighting the severity of the financial situation, Akoma Sports claimed.
Moreover, it was disclosed that the club owes the former CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah, salary arrears amounting to GHS 200,000 and beyond.
The discussions at the Manhyia Palace represent an important step towards resolving Kotoko’s financial problems. There is hope for the club’s future with the support of the club’s loyal fans and the intervention of the Asantehene.
Kotoko had a difficult last season, failing to win a trophy, and they are hoping that will not be the case this season, with key decisions expected to be made in the coming days to ensure success.
