Former Black Starlets head coach Laryea Kingston has disclosed that Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku was unhappy with his decision to step down from the role.
Kingston, a former Black Stars winger, was appointed head coach of the Black Starlets in April 2024 ahead of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship. Ghanas campaign ended at the semifinal stage following a 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso, denying the team a place in the final.
In the aftermath of that loss, Kingston stunned many by announcing his resignation during the post-match press conference, revealing later that the decision had already been made before the game.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Kingston explained that although Okraku respected his choice, the GFA president was clearly disappointed.
“Kurt Okraku was disappointed with my decision to leave my role as Black Starlets head coach. It was not about him, but my decision. I had made my decision to quit even before our final game,” he said.
He added that he requested a meeting with the GFA boss to formally explain his reasons for stepping down.
“I requested to meet him, and he gave me the chance, and I explained why I resigned. Even though he welcomed my decision, he was disappointed,” Kingston added.
Since leaving the Black Starlets, Kingston has worked in the United States and is currently serving as head coach of Ugandas youth national teams, where he is contributing to the countrys long-term player development and the shaping of its football philosophy.
