Labour and Employment Minister Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo has convened a committee to complete amendments to Ghana’s Labour Act, with a comprehensive report expected within two weeks.
The revisions address paternity leave provisions, shift definitions for the 24-hour economy policy, and remote work frameworks.
Dr. Pelpuo confirmed the committee’s mandate during a July 6, 2025 television interview, emphasizing alignment with international labour standards. “Amendments must reflect contemporary work environments while ensuring legislative durability,” he stated. The technical committee builds upon prior draft revisions inherited by the ministry.
Key proposed changes include extending maternity leave to 17-26 weeks and establishing flexible conditions for pregnant workers. The minister confirmed the Attorney-General will review the committee’s report before cabinet submission and parliamentary consideration.
Legislative timelines indicate potential parliamentary review before the third quarter of 2025. The revisions aim to modernize worker protections while accommodating evolving economic structures under Ghana’s extended-hour productivity initiative.
