The much advertised and well-planned demonstration by the National Democratic Congress’s branch in the United Kingdom failed to glitter as fewer than expected numbers turned up.
The Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who was in the UK to attend a fundraising event and a townhall meeting organized in his name was to be disrupted by a monstrous demonstration by members of the opposition NDC in the UK.
According to the opposition National Democratic Congress, Ghana’s economy has been mismanaged by the Akufo-Addo administration with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leading the Economic Management Team, and therefore ought to be blamed for it.
The demonstration, however, could only send less than 20 NDC members onto the streets of London as party members cited the global economic crisis as the reason.
Though arrangements were made to transport the branch members of the party from Milton Keynes, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Luton, Birmingham and other parts of the UK to join their London colleagues, they never showed up.
“In as much as Ghana is not doing well economically, it doesn’t mean that we should hold a demonstration against the government”, a Manchester branch member said.
Another member had this to say; “Let’s face facts, what is the basis for this demonstration? Is the UK doing any better? This is global and so we cannot blame the Ghanaian Government.”
“What can our people do about the economy if we come to power? Until the global recession stops, not even angels can turn things around in Ghana. Have things turned around here in the UK? No! This is why I never went. Enough of the deceptive politicking”, a member from London angrily said.
