Voter exhibition officers in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis are urging heightened public awareness of the Electoral Commission’s ongoing voter register exhibition following a notably low turnout in the exercise’s initial days.
Polling stations at Takoradi Presbyterian Church and Takoradi Technical University, with over 1,000 registered voters, reported fewer than 50 visitors on the first two days.
Similar low turnouts were observed in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions on the exhibition’s opening day.
The voter register exhibition, which runs from August 20 to 27, 2024, allows registered voters to request inclusions, raise objections, and remove the names of deceased individuals, among other updates.
One officer reported, “On Tuesday, August 20, we recorded 27 visitors across three polling stations. By 9:00 a.m., we had only two visitors by Wednesday morning. More education is needed to encourage people to come and check their details.”
The officer also noted that using a shortcode for online name checks might contribute to the low turnout.
“We are asking people to visit the stations in person if possible, as we believe increased awareness and engagement could improve participation,” the officer added.
