Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo has revealed that most members of the associations Executive Council were against Otto Addo continuing as head coach of the Black Stars.
Addo returned for his second stint as Ghana coach in March 2024, signing a three-year contract with an option for a further two years.
However, his tenure quickly came under scrutiny after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), sparking widespread criticism from supporters and stakeholders.
Despite the AFCON setback, the former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, temporarily easing pressure on his position.
The GFA, however, decided to end its relationship with Addo less than three months before the World Cup after the Black Stars suffered back-to-back friendly defeats against Austria and Germany, leading to the appointment of a new technical leader ahead of the tournament.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Oduro Sarfo disclosed that Addo did not enjoy widespread support within the GFAs Executive Council, although he personally believed the coach deserved more time to prove himself.
“Most people on the Executive Council did not like Otto Addo. Maybe it was only me who liked him or wanted him to stay because he was on the ascendancy and needed time, but then there was no time because we were heading to the World Cup and we needed to see improvement,” he said.
Following Addos exit, the GFA appointed experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal to lead the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time since the teams historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with the performance earning praise despite the teams eventual elimination.
