Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with its long-awaited X-Men reboot, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of the publisher’s most beloved superhero franchises within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Following years of speculation after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Marvel has officially assembled the creative team that will introduce its own version of the iconic mutant heroes, bringing fan-favorite characters like Wolverine, Professor X, Jean Grey, Magneto and Cyclops into the MCU.
The reboot represents the first time Marvel Studios will fully integrate the X-Men into its interconnected cinematic universe after more than two decades of Fox-produced films.
Marvel assembles creative team
The studio has tapped Jake Schreier, director of Thunderbolts, to helm the project. The screenplay will be written by Lee Sung Jin, creator of Beef, alongside The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo.
While Marvel has yet to announce an official release date or reveal story details, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feigehas confirmed that Avengers: Secret Wars will pave the way for the arrival of the mutants.
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Feige previously said:
“The whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men. We finally have the X-Men back.”
Schreier has also hinted that the reboot will stay true to what has made the comics resonate with audiences for decades.
“When you go back and read X-Men, there’s ideology, but also interpersonal drama—almost of a soap opera quality,” he explained. “Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes… that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.”
Sadie Sink expected to lead the next generation
One of the biggest developments is the introduction of Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, making her MCU debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The role has previously been portrayed by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner in Fox’s X-Men films.
Feige has described Sink’s character as a central figure in Marvel’s future plans.
“Sadie’s character is one that our fans know has immense significance within the Marvel Universe, and she plays a key role in the future of the MCU,” he said.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Samara Weaving has been cast as powerful telepath Emma Frost, a character previously played by January Jones in X-Men: First Class.
Casting speculation continues to swirl around the rest of the mutant roster. Actress Inde Navarrette recently fueled rumors after praising Mystique during a meeting with Schreier, while Cooper Hoffman has dismissed reports linking him to the role of Cyclops.
Classic X-Men returning before the reboot
Before Marvel unveils its new mutant lineup, several legendary X-Men actors will return in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December.
The film’s cast includes:

- Ian McKellen as Magneto
- James Marsden as Cyclops
- Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
- Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
- Kelsey Grammer as Beast
- Channing Tatum as Gambit
The returning cast is widely expected to serve as a bridge between Fox’s X-Men universe and Marvel Studios’ reboot rather than continue as the franchise’s long-term lineup.
Notably absent from the announced cast is Hugh Jackman, despite his acclaimed return as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine.
The age of mutants has already begun
Marvel has already started laying the foundation for mutants within the MCU.
The first explicit mention came in the finale of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, where Kamala Khan discovers she possesses a genetic mutation—a moment accompanied by the iconic theme from X-Men: The Animated Series. Since then, Marvel has gradually introduced familiar mutant characters across its expanding multiverse.
With a new creative team in place, fresh casting announcements emerging and Avengers: Secret Wars set to usher in a “new age of mutants,” Marvel Studios appears closer than ever to delivering a definitive MCU version of the X-Men.
For fans who have waited years to see Marvel’s most iconic mutant heroes share the screen with the Avengers, the countdown has officially begun.
