Ghana’s Black Stars were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium after a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser denied them victory in Carlos Queiroz’s first game in charge.
The hosts started brightly and nearly took an early lead through Daniel James. The former Manchester United winger twice threatened the Ghana goal inside the opening minutes, forcing Lawrence Ati-Zigi into a fine save before rattling the crossbar with another effort.
Ghana struggled to find their rhythm in the first half but still managed to create two notable opportunities. Jordan Ayew was gifted a golden chance after a mistake by Wales goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but the captain failed to convert in a one-on-one situation.
Kamaldeen Sulemana also tested the Welsh defence as the visitors finished the half without a goal despite registering two shots on target.
The Black Stars returned from the break looking far more composed and purposeful. Their improved display was rewarded in the 66th minute when substitute Caleb Yirenkyi found the breakthrough goal, capping an encouraging performance from the young midfielder.
With the lead secured, Ghana appeared on course for a morale-boosting victory and defended resolutely as Wales searched for a response. The Black Stars managed the game well for long periods and looked set to hand Queiroz a winning start.
However, heartbreak arrived deep into stoppage time when Hull City forward Lewis Koumas struck in the 93rd minute to rescue a draw for Wales and deny Ghana victory.
Despite conceding late, the match provided several positives for the Black Stars. Yirenkyi’s impact from the bench, the second-half improvement and the team’s overall resilience will encourage Queiroz as Ghana continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars will now turn their attention to their final warm-up match against Jamaica on June 10 before opening their World Cup campaign against Panama later this month.
