There are reports of an outbreak of measles in some parts of the Northern Region including the Regional Capital Tamale where more than 70 cases have been reported at various health centres in the region.

Though Health Officials in the Region are tight lipped on the matter, GBC News has seen a memo directing all Districts Health Directorates and Facilities to “intensify surveillance on measles and other diseases of epidemic potential for prompt action.”

A resident of Sagnerigu, who wants to remain unanimous, told GBC News, that, a relative who is a medical professional at one of the major hospitals in Tamale, has warned the family “to stay away from crowded places with children” as a result of the measles outbreak.

The resident also revealed that, there is a shortage of vaccines in the area.

“My wife visited all the major hospitals in Tamale for weighing, but they could not give the baby vaccines including measles vaccines.”

Sources at the Tamale Teaching Hospital have confirmed the shortage of some vaccines in the hospital.
