The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has demanded an urgent military investigation into the killing of three civilians abandoned by their security escort near Bawku on July 9.
The victims a driver and two passengers were shot dead after their cargo truck broke down en route to Bawku under military protection. Two others were rescued from the attack in Bazua, Upper East Region.
In a strongly-worded statement, MAYA condemned the “grave lapse in judgement and duty” by the escort team, asserting that the abandonment “undermined public confidence” and exposed citizens to “preventable danger.”
The group called on military leadership, National Security Minister, and Inspector-General of Police to conduct immediate probes.
MAYA warned that the patience of the Nayiri (Overlord of Mamprugu) should not be mistaken for weakness, stating: “If the state fails to provide equal protection, the Mamprusi people reserve the right to defend themselves.”
The appeal extends to President Mahama, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the National Peace Council to intervene.
MAYA emphasized that lasting peace requires ending impunity: “Justice must be served. Protection must be equal.
Peace cannot be built on injustice.” The incident intensifies pressure on Mahama’s government to address chronic insecurity in Bawku, where ethnic conflict has persisted despite repeated security operations.
