Michael Kwadwo Peprah

Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of the Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, has rejected police allegations that he obstructed an anti-illegal mining operation in the Desiri Forest Reserve.

Following his July 12 arrest shown in a viral video, Peprah clarified he sought operational details under Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources guidelines.

“Acting as a responsible leader, I approached the scene to inquire about the operation and verify the task force’s affiliation,” Peprah stated. He emphasized compliance with ministry protocols requiring miners to validate unfamiliar enforcement teams. The arrest occurred during an anti-galamsey (illegal mining) operation in Ahafo Ano North District, Ashanti Region.

Police claimed community members identified Peprah as involved in illegal mining – an allegation he strenuously denied. “Contrary to police claims, I did not obstruct official duties or intervene for miners,” he asserted, explaining his presence stemmed from political activities as a National Democratic Congress mining committee member.

The incident highlights tensions surrounding Ghana’s illegal mining crackdown. Peprah, released on police enquiry bail, framed his detention as punitive: “I was arrested for asking questions, not defending galamsey.” The Ghana Police Service has not provided additional evidence supporting their initial allegations.
