Mohamed Salah breaks Premier League record with opening day goal as Liverpool beat Ipswich 2-0 today 16th August 2025, at Portmond Road, Ipswich.
Salah scored Liverpool’s second goal and teed up their first for Diogo Jota on the hour mark as Slot got his tenure at the club off to a winning start in the post-Jürgen Klopp era.
Salah’s goal in the 65th minute meant the Egyptian has now scored on the opening day of the season nine times, breaking the tie for the record with Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, and Alan Shearer.
The 31-year-old has previously scored on the first day of the Premier League against Watford, his Liverpool debut in a thrilling 3-all stalemate during the 2017/18 season, before going on to score goals against West Ham during the 2018 season when the Reds brushed away the hammers by 4 goals to nil.
Salah again scored in Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Norwich City in the 2019 season. Salah continued the streak with a hat-trick against Leeds United in Liverpool’s 4:3 win against Leeds in the 2021 season and a goal against Fulham in the 2022 season.
Perhaps Salah’s most impressive opening day performance was the hat-trick in the 2020 season when Liverpool overcame Leeds in a seven-goal thriller.
The only time Salah failed to score on the first day of the EPL season was during 2023/24 when Liverpool drew 1-1 with Chelsea.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has now both scored and assisted in 32 different Premier League games, with only Wayne Rooney (36) doing so more in the competition’s history.
On his 350th appearance for Liverpool in all competitions, Mohamed Salah registered his 300th goal involvement for the club (212 goals, 88 assists).
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is now the outright leader for Premier League goals (9) and 14 goal involvements (9 goals, 5 assists) on opening day in the competition’s history.
Mohamed Salah’s records with Liverpool will go down in the annals of English football history as one of the greatest Africans and one of the best players to have ever played in the English Premier League.
