The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and Member of Parliament for Krowor, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has opened up about a significant moment in her education that was shaped by a decision her father made.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeekend on Wednesday May 7, she shared that after completing junior high school, she had been admitted to St. Monica’s Senior High School—but never attended, because her father told her she hadn’t qualified.

“When I reached the Secondary School level in my education, I gained admission at St. Monica’s Senior High School. But until recently, I didn’t know I got St. Monica’s. My dad told me I didn’t qualify,” she said.

She recalled that her father travelled all the way from Accra to Mampong to collect the admission letter, but when he returned, he gave her a different story.

“He looked at the journey he made from Accra to that place and then decided to come and tell me that my grades were not good enough. Ah, but when I checked with some who had gotten in, I wasn’t the best but I wasn’t the worst either,” she added.

Instead, she ended up attending Nungua Secondary School. She reflected that this outcome might have been influenced by a widespread belief at the time that “GAs don’t like travelling.”
