Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections, has underscored that positions of power and royalty are fundamentally calls to service.
During a recent visit to the Paramount Chief of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Kwadwo Yeboah Gyamfi, Dr. Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, emphasized that leadership should focus on societal development and serving the public.
In his address on Thursday, July 25, 2024, Dr. Prempeh highlighted the responsibility that comes with leadership and royalty. “Royalty is not merely a title or a privilege but a call to service. It is a responsibility to lead, guide, and serve our people with humility and integrity,” he stated. This sentiment reflects his commitment to fostering a governance style centred on service and community welfare.
Dr Prempeh, alongside Dr Bawumia, who are both of royal lineage, assured the traditional leader and the gathered elders of their unwavering dedication to integrating chieftaincy and religious institutions as crucial partners in national development. This commitment is not just a promise, but a recognition of the invaluable role these institutions play in our society. ‘Under our leadership, the Chieftaincy and religious institutions will be recognized as key contributors to governance and societal growth,’ he promised, emphasizing the importance of their role in the nation’s progress.
Nana Kwadwo Yeboah Gyamfi welcomed Dr Prempeh and his campaign team to his palace, expressing confidence in his candidacy. The Paramount Chief attributed Dr. Prempeh’s ascent to the running mate position to his proven dedication and effective management of critical government portfolios, including the Ministry of Education and Energy. “I am convinced that Bawumia and Napo will serve the country diligently. Their journey will be challenging, but with hard work, they will succeed,” the chief remarked.
The traditional leaders also voiced concerns about pressing issues such as illegal mining, or ‘galamsey,’ which has been harming water bodies. They urged Dr. Prempeh to address these environmental challenges and create employment opportunities for the youth. Dr. Prempeh, in response, not only reassured the audience but also instilled hope in their hearts. ‘We are committed to tackling these issues and creating opportunities for our youth,’ he reiterated, providing reassurance and instilling hope in the audience. Additionally, they called for the completion of ongoing projects from the Akufo-Addo administration and previous governments.
Dr. Prempeh was accompanied by notable figures including Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the NPP; Seth Acheampong, Eastern Regional Minister; and other regional and parliamentary candidates, reinforcing the NPP’s unwavering commitment to addressing local and national issues. This reassured the audience and instilled confidence in the party’s ability to handle the nation’s challenges.
As Dr. Prempeh and Dr. Bawumia continue their campaign, their message of service and commitment to national development resonates with traditional leaders and constituents, shaping their vision for Ghana’s future governance.
