Deputy Director, Operations, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Samuel Akuamoah, says the Commission is not reneging on its mandate to sensitise the public on their civic responsibilities.
This, for him, is crucial for the citizenry to have a deeper sense of the need to protect Ghana’s democratic gains at all times.
He said it is worrying that over the period citizens are losing confidence in democratically elected governments, a situation which emboldens military takeovers, especially in the West African sub-region.
Mr. Akuamoah made the remarks when he received a delegation from the Public Engagement Department of Parliament.
He said the NCCE will continue to raise the bar for public engagement.
Carved out of the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, the Department for Public Engagement provides support services to Parliament.
It promotes deeper public engagement in the work of Parliament. Director, Supt. Rtd. Afia Tengey, underscored the importance of key stakeholder collaboration. This, she said, informed the visit to the NCCE, which is a front-runner institution in civic education.
Deputy Director, Operations, National Commission for Civic Education, Samuel Akuamoah, regretted that democracy is assumed to be only about elections. He urged the team to engage Parliament to adequately resource the Commission to further enhance its work.
Head of the Citizens Bureau, Parliament, Prosper Hoetu, noted that engagement with NCCE will enhance public sensitisation to promote transparency and social accountability.
