Nkonya Senior High School (Nkosec) located in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region will celebrate its 60th anniversary in November, officials disclosed on Thursday.

Founded in November 1964, Nkonya Senior High School has produced several notable personalities who have served Ghana and the world in various fields of endeavour, including late Joshua Ofedie, former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority, and Hon. Alfred Agbesi, former Deputy Majority Leader in parliament.

Hon. Angela Alorwu, Member of Parliament for Afadzato South, and Prof. Patrick Agbesinyale, Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, are some other notable old students of  the School.

Speaking during the media launch of the 60th anniversary, Francis Anto, lecturer at the School of Public Health of the University of Ghana, Legon, and an old student, traced the history of the school from its humble beginnings.

Prof. Anto said Nkonya Senior High was a private community initiative by the chiefs and people of the Nkonya traditional area, which the government took over and transformed into a public educational institution.

He said the anniversary celebration under the theme: “Nkosec @ 60: Fulfilling the Aspirations of The Founding Fathers,” would take place in the school from the 15th to 17th of November 2024.

Over the years, Prof. Anto said the quality of the school’s infrastructure has deteriorated, affecting the physical attraction of the school.

He listed facilities, student beds, science lab, ICT laboratories, fence wall, vehicles, ultramodern library, and dormitories, as some of the urgent needs of the school.

Moreover, he urged all old students to contribute their quota toward the renovation and facelift of some key infrastructure, to restore the conducive academic aura the school had been known for.

“We owe our Alma mater a lot and this is our turn to give back to the school,” he added.

Prof. Anto also invited all old students, corporate institutions, and benevolent organizations to support the planning committee and the management of the school to orgaise a successful commemoration.

Moses Kwabena Ansah, the Headmaster of the school said feverish preparations were underway toward the anniversary celebration.

Mr. Ansah lauded the government for initiating some infrastructure projects, including the new administration block, assembly hall complex among others in the school, urging the authorities to take steps to complete these structures for the school to put them to good use.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Michael Atiboli, from the 1980-year group, urged his colleague former students to come on board and make their financial and material contributions towards a successful anniversary celebration.

Anniversary souvenir including the school cloth, anniversary T-Shirts, cups, caps, and keyrings were also launched and auctioned during the media launch as the school’s Jama (Cheer) group provided quality traditional cheer music.
