The Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has expressed disappointment over the New Patriotic Party’s decision to annul the initial constituency executive elections held on July 11, 2026.
Speaking to JoyNews after casting his ballot in the re-run election at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, the MP said he did not see the need for the NPP’s National Steering Committee to take such a decision, adding that the process of the initial election was transparent.
“I am disappointed that we had to come back and do this all over again. The first election was conducted peacefully, just as the ongoing one,” the MP stated.
The MP said that despite his reservations, he supports the decision to re-conduct the election because it is the party’s directive.
“Even though I am disappointed, I am also in support of the re-run of the election since it is the party’s decision to re-conduct the election,” he noted.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye also acknowledged what he described as a fair and orderly process in the ongoing re-run after touring all three voting centers at the venue.
“I have moved around all the voting centers and I can say that the process so far has been peaceful and transparent. Delegates are voting without any interference,” he said.
The MP further assured that he will work closely with whoever is elected by the party delegates, stressing that unity is key to securing victory for the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 general elections.
“For me it’s about party unity. We will all rally behind the winners and work hard for Dr. Bawumia’s victory in 2028,” he added.
Background
The re-run comes after the NPP’s National Steering Committee annulled the initial poll held on July 11, citing breaches of party directives, electoral regulations, and in some cases, existing court orders.
In contrast to the first exercise, which was held without Electoral Commission oversight and was disrupted, Sunday’s re-run is being supervised by officials from the EC.
A total of 1,258 delegates are expected to vote at the Kumasi Cultural Centre to elect new constituency executives to lead the party’s activities in Bantema ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Security personnel from the Ghana Police Service have been deployed to the venue to maintain law and order.
The process, scheduled to end at 4pm, is being closely monitored by national and regional party executives to ensure strict adherence to the NPP’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
