Ghanaian comedian Lekzy DeComic says the previous NPP government paid more attention to comedians than the current administration.
He made the statement during the ninth edition of Joy FM’s Showbiz Roundtable, held on Saturday, 8 August 2026.
“When the NPP was in power, I drew the attention of one of their executives to the fact that anytime they did stuff for the entertainment industry, they trivialised comedy. The moment I mentioned it, he drew the attention of the GTA boss Akwasi Agyemang to it. Since then, anytime we had a comedy show, they would call you and ask how the GTA could support our show, whether in kind or whichever form. They would try and come through for you,” he said.
Lekzy noted that it was through the previous government that some comedians had the opportunity to travel to the USA to be part of the Ghana Week celebration in Washington, DC.
“But with this current government, it appears we don’t even exist in their books. Last year, I invited two South African comedians to come to Ghana to help me do my show and I went to see their acting Ambassador and he asked how he could help us. He was ready to do everything for us to have a successful show,” he said.
According to the award-winning comedian, he also got a call from somebody from Blackstar Experience who told him they had a collaboration with the South African government and had seen that he had an upcoming event with some of the comedians from that country, so they needed him to send some footage so they could add it to their proposal.
“…and I asked them how I would benefit from it because I was initiating it myself. That was the last time I heard from him. And I even called somebody to reach out to Mr Rex Omar. It was a three-way call. He said we would hear from him and that was it. If it was the previous government that call would have changed something for me. And till date, I have not heard from them. Nothing. Zero effort. And we are still here, making time. So when Kojo Preko Dankwah said he would score them zero percent for work done so far, I support him hundred percent,” he said.
Lekzy further indicated that his biggest disappointment with the current government stems from the fact that it has the highest number of creatives appointed to various leadership positions.
Themed “Assessing 20 Months of Government’s Impact on Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts”, the ninth Showbiz Roundtable examined the government’s commitments to the sector, assessed the level of implementation, measured the impact of policies and explored the road ahead for Ghana’s creative economy.
The discussion featured industry figures including Chief Operating Officer of Maestro Africa Group, Francis Doku; Lead Consultant at Jesse Agyepong and Associates, Jesse Agyepong; pop culture journalist Olele Salvador; and Joy FM broadcaster Ken Addy.
Also in attendance were comedians Lekzy DeComic, Kojo Pjay, Percy Obrempong, James Brown and Jacinta. Others were broadcasters Austine Woode and Kojo Preko Dankwah, while tourism professional Emmanuel Frimpong was also present.
