English Championship side Swansea City have completed the signing of Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian club Zulte Waregem on a four-year contract, with the club holding the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.The 20-year-old becomes Swansea’s latest addition ahead of the 2026/27 season after an outstanding breakthrough campaign in the Belgian Pro League, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 34 league appearances.A product of Ghanaian academy Great Corinthians FC, Opoku moved to Belgium in 2024 to join Jong Essevee before earning promotion to Zulte Waregem’s senior side.He played a key role in helping the club secure promotion from the Challenger Pro League before establishing himself as one of the league’s brightest young attacking talents in the top flight.His impressive displays also earned him international recognition.Opoku made his senior Black Stars debut in May 2026 after progressing through Ghana’s youth ranks, having previously represented the country at U20 level.Swansea head coach Vitor Matos believes the winger has all the attributes needed to succeed in the Championship.”He is a young player who has been exposed to a lot of senior football in Belgium,” Matos said.”He will be able to adapt to the physicality, the intensity and the amount of games in the Championship as we know he is a fast and sharp player.”Opoku has joined us here in Austria, and he has had his first training session and we’re excited to have him here.”Sporting Director Ben Stevens also expressed his delight after completing the transfer.”Really excited with Joseph joining us and looking forward to seeing his attacking potential flourish in Vitor’s team,” Stevens said.”Two full seasons with Zulte Waregem in Belgium plus being involved with Ghana national teams highlight the ability of this young talent.”Opoku joins the Welsh club with growing expectations after attracting interest from several clubs across Europe following his impressive performances in Belgium.His arrival strengthens Swansea’s attacking options as they prepare for the new Championship campaign and aim to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.The move also represents another significant milestone in the youngster’s career, with the talented winger now set to test himself in one of Europe’s most demanding competitions while continuing his development with both Swansea and the Ghana national team.
