The President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has commended Asante Gold Corporation for the progress made on the resettlement of the Bibiani Old Town and Zongo communities, describing it as a step toward improving living conditions for affected residents.
The commendation came at a ceremony to hand over a newly constructed school complex by Asante Gold Bibiani Limited to the Ghana Education Service (GES), part of an ongoing resettlement programme for the two communities.
The facility, located at the resettlement site, includes a kindergarten, primary and junior high school, as well as seven teacher accommodation units, including a two-bedroom apartment for the headteacher. It is expected to become operational at the start of the next academic term, replacing the existing school in Old Town.
Addressing the gathering, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II said the project marks a turning point for the area, noting that previous operators of the mine had made similar commitments without completion.
He urged the company to sustain the pace of work to ensure full delivery of the resettlement programme.
He added that timely completion remains critical, particularly as ongoing blasting activities near the mine continue to affect residents in Bibiani Old Town and Zongo.
The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Asante Gold Corporation, Dave Anthony, said the handover of the school underscores the company’s commitment to the affected communities.
He acknowledged that the project had faced delays due to a range of challenges, but noted that construction is now advancing steadily.
According to him, the company is targeting completion of the first 100 housing units by June 2026 to facilitate the relocation of residents from areas in close proximity to active mining operations.
Mr. Anthony said the initiative goes beyond relocation, aimed at providing safer housing and improved social infrastructure for both current residents and future generations.
General Manager of Asante Gold Bibiani Limited, Ing. Samuel Kwesi Takyi, expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their support, and to residents of Old Town and Zongo for their patience during delays.
He called on the Ghana Education Service to ensure proper maintenance of the school and staff accommodation to enable the facility to serve the communities over the long term.
Representatives of Bibiani Old Town and Zongo welcomed the development, describing it as an indication of progress on the broader resettlement programme.
With the first batch of housing units expected by June 2026, they said the visible pace of work offers renewed confidence that a long-standing commitment is being fulfilled, and expressed hope that construction momentum will be sustained to allow families to relocate to safer and improved living conditions.
