Ghana coach Otto Addo has addressed the surprising omission of IF Elfsborg midfielder Michael Baidoo from his latest squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan, despite his standout performances in Sweden.
Baidoo, who has been in exceptional form, scored a crucial goal in Elfsborg’s recent victory over Italian side AS Roma in the Europa League.
However, his impressive display wasn’t enough to secure a place in the 25-man Black Stars squad announced on Friday.
During a press conference, Addo explained the decision, stating, “He is on our radar. We are in touch. Michael Baidoo is an excellent striker, and we will see what will happen in the future.
“At the moment, this is what we think. Inaki and Semenyo are scoring, and to be honest, I think the Premier League is a bit tougher.”
While Baidoo’s omission raised eyebrows, Addo’s explanation suggests that while the 25-year-old is being closely monitored, the coach opted for players in bigger competitions such as Inaki Williams and Antoine Semenyo, for the upcoming fixtures.
The Black Stars have struggled in their opening matches of the AFCON qualifiers, losing to Angola and drawing with Niger.
They are now seeking to turn things around with crucial victories against Sudan to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The game will take place on October 10 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
