Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has shared his admiration for African football legend George Weah after meeting him during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Addo, who is serving as one of FIFA’s technical observers at the tournament, posted a photograph of the pair on social media and described the encounter as a special moment. Captioning the image, the former Ghana international expressed his delight at meeting the man he referred to as the “King” of football.
The meeting held particular significance for Addo, who has previously spoken about growing up idolising Weah. The Liberian icon remains the only African player to have won the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the Ballon d’Or, both achieved in 1995.
In his social media post, Addo also highlighted Weah’s humanitarian efforts during Liberia’s civil wars, recalling how the former footballer regularly supported displaced Liberians in refugee camps across West Africa, including in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Guinea.
Weah is currently in the United States supporting his son, Timothy Weah, who is representing the United States at the World Cup. Addo, meanwhile, continues his duties with FIFA’s technical study group, monitoring matches and providing expert analysis throughout the tournament.
