The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has retrieved 1,400 rounds of live ammunition concealed at a mechanic workshop near the Assemblies of God Church in Bolgatanga.
According to the police, the discovery was made following a report lodged on Saturday, May 9, 2026, by an auto mechanic who was alerted by his apprentice after suspicious items were found on the premises.
The apprentice reportedly made the discovery while sweeping the workshop, prompting the mechanic to immediately inform the police.
A team of officers from the Upper East Regional Police Command swiftly responded to the scene. Upon a thorough search, the officers found two sealed packets hidden inside fertiliser sacks placed in a hen coop on the premises.
Police said each packet contained 700 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, bringing the total to 1,400 rounds.
The ammunition has been retrieved and taken into police custody to aid investigations. The police say efforts are underway to trace the source, ownership, and intended use of the ammunition.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with the discovery.
