The Ghana Police Service is investigating an attack on the office and residence of Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitalization. A group of about 15 men reportedly vandalized her property and stole several items on Monday, December 9, 2024.
Police have visited the crime scene and launched a special operation to find the suspects. In a statement, the police assured the public of their commitment to bringing the attackers to justice. Security around Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s home and office has been increased for her safety.
The stolen items include cash, a branded Nissan Hardbody vehicle, a television, a printer, two stabilizers, mobile phones, food supplies, and three new motorbikes. The attackers also destroyed CCTV cameras, barbed wire, and doors during the break-in.
The incident comes shortly after Ghana’s 2024 general elections. Authorities have not confirmed if the attack is related to election unrest. In Damongo, angry youth recently burned the Electoral Commission office over delays in announcing results.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, a key member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost her parliamentary seat for the Ablekuma West Constituency to Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Addo won with 31,866 votes against Owusu-Ekuful’s 26,575 votes.
The police have urged Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid unlawful actions as the country transitions to new leadership. Security remains on high alert to ensure public safety.
