Persistent power outages, known locally as “dumsor,” are significantly disrupting preparations for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Bimbilla.

Students and teachers have voiced their frustrations over the unreliable power supply, which hampers effective study and teaching.

The outages have forced students to rely on inadequate alternative light sources, such as candles and lanterns, raising concerns about their safety and academic performance. Teachers are struggling to cover the curriculum adequately, with many having to adjust lesson plans frequently due to the inconsistent electricity supply.

A local school principal expressed the widespread frustration, “These power outages are severely affecting our students’ ability to prepare for their exams. We need a reliable power supply to ensure that our students can perform to the best of their abilities.”

Parents are also worried about the impact of “dumsor” on their children’s education. “My son has to study by candlelight, which is not safe or effective. We need the government to address this issue urgently,” said one concerned parent.

The situation highlights the broader challenges of energy instability in Ghana, affecting various aspects of daily life and critical sectors such as education. There are increasing calls for the government to prioritize resolving these power issues to support students and educators as they prepare for important national examinations
