Minister for Public Enterprises Joseph Cudjoe has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering dedication to equipping regulatory bodies, including the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), with the necessary resources to fulfil their mandates effectively.
Speaking at the FDA Annual Stakeholders Meeting, Cudjoe emphasized the FDA’s critical role in safeguarding public health.
Cudjoe likened the FDA’s work to a divine responsibility, highlighting its essential role in ensuring food and medical safety. “The well-being and continuity of our existence rely heavily on the FDA’s ability to oversee food and drug safety,” he said.
Addressing the meeting, which reviewed the FDA’s financial and operational performance for 2023, Cudjoe noted that over 80% of diseases affecting and causing human fatalities are related to food and drugs. He stressed that the FDA’s role is thus “indispensable.”
“We cannot avoid consuming food or drinking water, and there is always a risk that food sellers, even if well-intentioned, might inadvertently provide harmful substances. It is impractical for each individual to have personal testing facilities for every item consumed,” he explained.
Cudjoe acknowledged the FDA’s relentless efforts amid significant challenges such as salary constraints and staffing issues.
He commended the Authority for its commitment to expanding operations to enhance public safety and support the nation’s development.
Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, CEO of the FDA, reiterated the Authority’s steadfast commitment to fulfilling its mandate and ensuring the holistic well-being of the public. The annual stakeholder meeting updated attendees on the FDA’s achievements and regulatory activities in 2023.
