Pure Earth Ghana has announced the appointment of George Bruno Akanlu as its new Country Director, effective immediately.

Mr. Akanlu succeeds Esmond Wisdom Quansah, who has transitioned to the role of Africa Programme Director after years of dedicated leadership and impactful service in advancing Pure Earth’s environmental health initiatives in Ghana and across the region.

Mr. Akanlu brings extensive experience in public health leadership, strategic programme management, stakeholder engagement and development programming. He brings over 15 years of leadership experience in delivering large-scale, high-impact health and development programmes.

Before joining Pure Earth Ghana, George served as Country Director of Marie Stopes Ghana (MSI Reproductive Choices Ghana), where he led national reproductive health and community health interventions, institutional partnerships and organisational growth initiatives.

With a strong background in strengthening public health systems and evidence-based interventions, Mr. Akanlu is expected to lead Pure Earth Ghana’s efforts in addressing lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) pollution, advancing environmental health research and strengthening partnerships that protect vulnerable communities from toxic pollution exposure.

Speaking on his appointment, Mr. Akanlu expressed enthusiasm about joining Pure Earth Ghana at a critical time in environmental health advocacy.

“I am honoured to join Pure Earth Ghana and contribute to the organisation’s important work in addressing lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) pollution. Environmental pollution remains a significant public health challenge and I look forward to working with the team, government institutions, communities, development partners and stakeholders to advance sustainable solutions that improve lives and protect future generations from toxic pollution,” he said.

In welcoming George Bruno Akanlu, Pure Earth reaffirmed its commitment in strengthening national efforts to address lead, mercury and other toxic pollution challenges that threaten public health and environmental safety.

The organisation looks forward to his stewardship in deepening partnerships with government, civil society and international stakeholders to advance a lead-free future for all Ghanaians.
