SaveGhanaFootball: Fix Ghana football or leave – 61-year-old lady tells GFA, Sports Ministry

A passionate football fan in her early 60s has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), in the ongoing SaveGhanaFootball demonstration.

She is demanding immediate improvements in the state of Ghanaian football.

The elderly woman, who stood out in the crowd of vibrant youth protesters, expressed her disappointment with the current quality of the Ghana Premier League.

She emphasised the lack of excitement, citing the declining performances of top clubs like Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, and Great Olympics.

Her discontent also extended to the underwhelming results of the Black Stars, which she considered her sole source of joy in football.

The #SaveGhanaFootball demonstrators, comprising sports enthusiasts and journalists, are advocating for positive changes in various aspects of Ghanaian football. Key concerns raised during the protest include the perceived low monetary value of the Ghana Premier League, substandard facilities, and the need for more attention to women’s football and lower-tier divisions, including grassroots football.

The demonstration follows Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the Black Stars failed to secure a single victory. The team’s early exit in the group stage prompted public outcry and intensified calls for improvements in the football landscape.

The GFA, under scrutiny for its handling of the national team and other football-related matters, is currently in the process of appointing a new coach for the Black Stars. However, the demonstrators argue that addressing fundamental issues should take precedence over coaching changes.

The diverse group of protesters aims to draw attention to the need for comprehensive reforms in Ghanaian football, encompassing both the elite and grassroots levels.

The elderly woman’s impassioned plea underscores the depth of concern among football fans of all ages regarding the current state of the sport in the country.
