Barely two weeks after securing a decisive victory over incumbent MP Andrew Mercer, Sekondi’s Member of Parliament-elect, Blay Nyamekye Armah, has launched a campaign to restore streetlights across the constituency.
The initiative, dubbed the “Lighting the Streets” campaign, is part of his promise to restore Sekondi to its former glory.
The effort comes in response to longstanding concerns over the lack of functional streetlights on major roads in Sekondi, including European Town, Anafo, and the stretch linking Bakado to Nkotompo.
These areas were dark and risky at night due to insufficient lighting. During TV3’s “Fixing the Streetlights” campaign earlier this year, the dire state of Sekondi’s streetlights was highlighted, with many principal streets shown in complete darkness.
Blay Nyamekye Armah has begun replacing streetlight bulbs along these critical roads to improve safety and encourage evening activity, particularly during the festive season.
The street lighting effort is being carried out in stages, with phase one involving the installation of around 80 streetlight bulbs along the European Town-to-Bakado route. Phase two will focus on the stretch from Bakado to Nkotompo.
Residents have welcomed the intervention with enthusiasm. Razak Karim, a commercial driver, expressed relief, recounting a near-miss involving an eight-year-old child due to the lack of streetlights. “This is a huge relief for us. It’s been unsafe driving in the dark, and this effort is a blessing,” he said.
It is anticipated that the streetlights, besides beautifying Sekondi, will reignite brisk business at night.
The MP-elect’s swift action has sparked hope among residents, many of whom believe this is a step towards a brighter and safer Sekondi.
