Selassie Ibrahim: Foreign telenovelas destroying Ghana’s local film industry

Veteran Ghanaian actress and film producer Selassie Ibrahim has expressed deep concern over the growing dominance of foreign telenovelas on local television and the negative impact it continues to have on the Ghanaian movie industry.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz on Tuesday December 2, she did not hold back as she addressed what she believes is one of the major setbacks for the growth and sustainability of local filmmaking.

According to her, television stations have played a significant role in crippling the local industry by prioritising cheap foreign content over Ghanaian productions.

“They destroyed the industry. They prefer going to the Spanish to buy the 20-year-old telenovelas and dub them in Twi,” she stated, criticising broadcasters for sidelining local talent and stories in favour of imported shows.

Selassie Ibrahim argued that the influx of translated telenovelas has drained investment from the local creative economy, leaving Ghanaian actors, producers, and technical professionals with limited opportunities.
